Meema Spadola

Meema Spadola made “My Mother’s Secret” in 1992 when she was a senior at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. It combines her feelings about her mother coming out when Meema was ten years old with interviews with five children and young adults who went through similar experiences. She shot it on Hi 8, transferred it to VHS tape, and edited it on the college’s VHS editing machine. It screened at both the NYC and San Francisco LGBT film festivals. She went on to produce and direct documentaries for PBS and HBO including “Breasts: A Documentary” (1996)  and “Private Dicks: Men Exposed” (1999).  In 2000 she revisited the subject of “My Mother’s Secret” with “Our House: A Very Real Documentary About Kids of Gay & Lesbian Parents,” which screened on PBS and won Best Documentary, Outfest 2000 and the New York Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.  She is now a postpartum doula and Certified Lactation Counselor living in Brooklyn, NY with her family.
