Tricia Scully

Tricia Scully grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, completed a double major in Deaf Education and Elementary Education at Michigan State; a Master’s in Learning Disabilities at Northern Illinois University; and taught Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students for over 30 years.  She used filmmaking as part of that work.  “It was the perfect medium for capturing the lesson and my students were highly motivated to be stars in the movies.  It didn’t take long before the students were doing the filming and casting the movies.”  In retirement she has spent the large part of her winters at a lesbian retirement village, the Carefree Resort, in southwest Florida, where she has made two films to date.  “Serving With Pride” draws on other residents’ experiences serving in the US military.  In  “Girl Scouts-A Memoir,” Scully joins other residents in recalling happy days in the Girl Scouts.  “For me,” Scully says,” it is a sweet reminder of how fortunate we were to have been able to be singing around the campfire.”  Both films integrate scrapbook photographs and memorabilia with oral histories.
